I Fixed My Laptop’s Wi-Fi With ChatGPT - Without Knowing What I Was Doing

My laptop suddenly stopped connecting to Wi-Fi. I had no idea what was wrong, and normally I would just look for someone to fix it. This time, I decided to see how far I could get with ChatGPT. Turns out, pretty far.

My laptop suddenly stopped connecting to Wi-Fi.

It could see the network. It could even connect to it. But the internet barely worked.

And I had absolutely no idea what was wrong.

Normally, this is the point where I would start looking for someone who actually knows how to fix computers. Instead, I opened ChatGPT.

First, we ruled out the obvious

Before touching anything inside the laptop, ChatGPT had me check whether the problem was actually the laptop.

I connected it to my phone’s hotspot.

Same problem.

That was useful. The router probably wasn’t the issue. Something was wrong with the laptop itself.

Then we checked the Wi-Fi connection

ChatGPT walked me through checking the wireless adapter and connection details in Windows.

The laptop was connecting, but the signal and connection quality didn’t look right.

At this point, the problem started looking less like a software issue and more like something physical.

And then I opened the laptop

This is the part I definitely wouldn’t have done on my own.

With ChatGPT guiding me through what to look for, I removed the bottom cover and found the Wi-Fi card.

There were two tiny antenna cables connected to it.

Or rather, there were supposed to be.

One of them was disconnected.

That was it.

I reconnected the antenna cable, put the laptop back together and turned it on.

Wi-Fi worked normally again.

No repair shop. No replacement parts. No new laptop.

Just one tiny cable.

Would I recommend blindly following AI instructions and opening your laptop? Absolutely not.

ChatGPT didn’t magically know what was wrong. We got there by eliminating possibilities one by one.

And I still had to look at the actual hardware, understand what I was seeing and decide whether I was comfortable touching it.

But this is exactly the kind of thing I find interesting about AI.

It didn’t repair my laptop.

It helped me figure out a problem I would otherwise have paid someone else to diagnose.

And yes, without it, I would have been looking for a repair technician because I had no idea what to do.
